Non-Executive Directors

Anne Whitaker - Interim Chairman

Anne Whitaker was appointed as a Non-Executive Director in September 2008 and has held the position of Interim Chair since February 2010.

Anne is a Chartered Accountant. She has considerable finance experience in large and complex organisations and was an Audit Partner with Ernst & Young, specialising in financial services, for twelve years. In this role she was responsible for the audits of a number of different types of organisations, including global FTSE 100 investment managers. She was also Head of Audit for Financial Services at Ernst & Young from 2000 to 2004. Anne’s voluntary sector interests include working with YourStory in Lambeth, an organisation which provides help in employment, criminal justice, education and sports and personal development, and working as a volunteer with the MicroLoan Foundation, a microfinance organisation operating in Malawi, helping clients to build businesses.

Professor C Michael Roberts, MB.Ch.B., MA(Med.Ed.), MD, FRCP, ILTHE - Non-Executive Director

Professor Michael (Mike) Roberts was appointed as the Academic Representative to the Trust Board in July 2004, and was re-appointed to serve in this capacity until June 2012.

Mike has Board responsibility for advancing the cause of education and training, and is a member of the Trust's Multi-Disciplinary Education and Training Group. He was appointed to Whipps Cross as a Consultant Chest Physician in 1993, becoming Professor of Medical Education for Clinical Practice at Barts and The London Queen Mary's School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2004.

Mike is also Associate Director of the Clinical Effectiveness Unit of the Royal College of Physicians. He was previously Director of the North East Thames Foundation School, and in October 2008 became Dean for Students at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. Mike has a strong interest in reforming undergraduate medical education to better align it to the practice needs of postgraduate work responsibilities, as well as advancing clinical service reforms which work across primary and secondary care.

Steven Robinson - Non-Executive Director

Steven Robinson was appointed as a Non-Executive Director in December 2008, having initially served on the Trust Board as an Associate Non-Executive Director from August 2008.

Steven has wide experience in the commercial and banking sectors. He is currently Strategy Change and Integration Director in the Commercial business unit in Lloyds Banking Group plc. In this role, he is accountable for Lloyds’ strategy in the small and medium enterprise sector of the UK, delivering all aspects of the commercial business integration programme following the merger between Lloyds and HBoS, as well as the effectiveness and efficiency of its end-to-end fulfilment processes, customer service and operational service centres. He was appointed Chair of the Trust’s Governance Committee in March 2009.

Stuart Gavurin -  Non-Executive Director

Stuart Gavurin became an Associate Non-Executive Director in July 2008 and was appointed as a Non-Executive Director in November 2009.

With over 40 years’ experience operating at the top of a series of major organisations and holding corporate positions ranging from Associate Director to Chair, Stuart has a vast knowledge of company Board level responsibility.

He began working with the NHS in the 1990s, and has facilitated and administered partner working relationships between NHS organisations, local authorities and housing associations for health, social care and regeneration projects.

He was Chair of Assura LIFT Holdings, one of the UK’s leading investors in primary care centres, and has also worked as Director of Primary Care and LIFT with British Health Enterprises.

In both posts, Stuart was responsible for the continuing development of new and existing primary care centres across the UK. At Whipps Cross, he is a member of the Environmental Governance Committee, dealing with all capital projects including the new A&E department and the redevelopment of the Maternity Department.

Terry Day -  Non-Executive Director

Terry Day was appointed as Non-Executive Director in November 2009.

Terry originally trained as a speech and language therapist in Manchester before moving to Manchester City Council as Head of its Equality Group.

Terry has over 25 years’ experience of equality, diversity and human rights. Her previous appointments include Chief Executive of Age Concern Liverpool, Equality Champion at London Underground Ltd, Head of Equality, Diversity and Human Rights at the Healthcare Commission and Interim Head of Equality and Inclusion at the Olympic Delivery Authority, as well as having run her own consultancy specialising in equality and diversity.

Terry lives locally and works for the Greater London Authority, where she leads on diversity and social policy.

Executive Directors

Dr Lucy Moore MB, ChB, MPH, FFPHM
Chief Executive


Dr Lucy Moore was appointed as Chief Executive in November 2004 and has led the Trust through a significant turnaround process.

She has extensive experience of both providing and commissioning healthcare, working at Board level since 1995. In particular, she brings a clinical background, a strong strategic perspective and an extensive knowledge of performance management, education and training.

Her previous roles have included Director of Workforce and Strategy for the former North East London Strategic Health Authority and Chief Executive of the East London Workforce Development Confederation.

She was also Director of Public Health at the former Redbridge and Waltham Forest Health Authority. Lucy qualified as a doctor at Manchester University and worked in Manchester, London and Sydney before settling in London. She lives with her partner and four children in North London.

Professor Shona Brown RN, BSc, MSc, DMan
Executive Director of Operations


Shona Brown trained as a registered general nurse in Dundee. She joined the Trust in September 2005 as Director of Nursing and Quality, becoming Acting Chief Operating Officer in February 2008 before being appointed as Executive Director of Operations in July 2008.

Prior to joining Whipps Cross, she was Acting Director of Workforce at the former North East London Strategic Health Authority where her responsibilities included education, commissioning and designing new ways of working for health care staff. She was also responsible for leading a collaborative improvement programme to promote better management of care for people living with long-term conditions, which involved all 14 trusts in the sector. Shona also worked at the NHS Modernisation Agency where she led a national programme to improve access to endoscopy services.

Shona is Visiting Professor of Nursing and Strategic Development at London South Bank University. She is an Executive Trustee of the National Florence Nightingale Foundation (a charitable organisation which funds nursing scholarships aimed at improving patient care and nursing practice) and an international member of Sigma Theta Tau (a nursing academic honour society).

She is passionate about involving patients and the public in the development of services. Whipps Cross is her local hospital.

Sue Edwards, Acting Director of Operations

Sue Edwards trained as registered nurse in Kent, working predominantly in Accident and Emergency and Intensive Care roles. She joined Whipps Cross in 2000 as General Manager for the Accident and Emergency Department, becoming General Manager for Critical Care in 2003. In 2006 she became Assistant Director for Critical Care and Surgery, leading the merger of the previous Critical Care and Surgery Directorates. Since July 2010, she has held the role of Acting Director of Operations. 

Prior to working at Whipps Cross, Sue was Service Manager for Emergency Care for Kent & Canterbury Hospital and South Kent Hospitals, the first joint post between the two organisations, where she managed two major Accident and Emergency departments and two Minor Injury departments. Sue worked with Canterbury Christ Church University as clinical lead for its Accident and Emergency nursing course, also developing its Emergency Nurse Practitioner degree course.

Sue’s interests have always centred around creating an energised working environment by empowering staff to be creative and through encouraging new ideas which have the patient’s interests at heart and lead to high standards of service delivery.

Cathy Geddes BSc (Hons), MA
Director of Nursing, Quality and Performance


Cathy Geddes trained as a nurse in Shropshire before moving to London in 1987. She worked at several hospitals, including Whipps Cross, specialising in orthopaedics and emergency medicine.

She took up her first Director of Nursing post at Newham University Hospital in 2004. She then became Deputy Chief Nurse for the South Central Strategic Health Authority in 2007 before becoming Director of Nursing and Quality at Whipps Cross in November 2008. Cathy has a BSc in Health Services Management, a Postgraduate Certificate in Evidence Based Healthcare from Oxford University and an MA in Leadership.

She is passionate about improving quality of care and putting the patient at the centre of everything we do.

Dr John Hogan MB, ChB, BSc (Hons), FRCP
Medical Director


Dr John Hogan was appointed as the Trust's Medical Director in April 2006.  Dr Hogan qualified in Medicine at the University of Manchester and took up his present post, a joint appointment as Consultant Cardiologist to Barts and The London NHS Trust and Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust, in April 1992.

His previous posts include appointments at the University of Wales College of Medicine, the Royal Brompton Hospital and at King’s College Hospital. As Lead Clinician for Cardiology, Dr Hogan has taken a leading role in the development of an integrated cardiac unit at Whipps Cross which encompasses all administrative investigation and out-patient cardiac activity in a single site. This allows easier patient access and "one-stop" attendances at out-patient clinics whilst improving the working environment for the cardiac teams.

In 2004, he led the commissioning and development of a dedicated Cardiac Catheterisation Unit at Whipps Cross, which now undertakes coronary intervention (PTCA) on site, the only district general hospital in Greater London to do so.

Andy Morris CPFA
Director of Finance and ICT


Andy Morris was appointed in September 2007. He has held similar positions in several other NHS Trusts and has over 18 years’ Board level experience.

In recent years, he has taken an NHS trust through the Foundation Trust application process and has played a leading role in the turnaround of financially challenged NHS Trusts. Andy originally started his career with Barclays Bank, trained and qualified whilst working in local government and also worked for KPMG as a senior management consultant.

Non-voting Directors

Dr Alan Hakim MB BChir, MA FRCP
Director of Strategy and Business Development (from August 2009)


Dr Alan Hakim was appointed as the Trust's Director of Strategy and Business Improvement in August 2009.

Dr Hakim qualified in Medicine at the University of Cambridge, and trained in General Medicine and Rheumatology at Addenbrooke’s, Cambridge and University College Hospital. He was an Arthritis Research Campaign Clinical Fellow at St Thomas’ Hospital before taking up his present post as Consultant Physician and Rheumatologist at Whipps Cross in April 2000. Over the past seven years, as Lead Clinician he has worked to sustain and develop a high-class Rheumatology and Osteoporosis service at Whipps Cross, including a large portfolio of clinical trials in state-of-the-art medicines.

Education and research have been an important part of Dr Hakim’s commitment to his specialty - he has over 50 publications, including chapters in four major textbooks and is co-author of five books. In 2008 Dr Hakim was appointed Lead Clinician for Emergency Medicine and has worked closely with all parties in Community/Primary Care as well as across the Hospital to improve standards of care. In 2008 he was awarded ‘Advanced Medical Leader’ with the British Association of Medical Managers. Other roles have included; Chair of the Medical Staff Association at Whipps Cross, Vice-Chair of the Save Whipps Cross Campaign, Member of Council of the British Society for Rheumatology and Secretary to the Rheumatology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine, and Medical Advisor to several Medical Charities. Dr Hakim is committed to improving integrated care and in his current role works closely with Health for North East London advisory groups and local General Practice systems. 

Arthur Jones
Interim Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development


Arthur Jones joined Whipps Cross Hospital as Interim Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development in June 2010.

Arthur is the Managing Director of Chiltern HR Consultants Ltd, a company specialising in interim management, general consultancy, change management and specialist investigations, operating primarily in the health sector.

Arthur’s previous experience includes careers in industry and in the NHS, where he was HR Director of an NHS Trust. He has undertaken many interim assignments at Board level, implemented change management programmes and carried out specialist consultancy projects. Most recently he has held positions at South Downs Health NHS Trust, NHS South Coast and Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust.

Arthur is a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD, an Executive Coach and also an Industrial Engineer and Alumnus of Ashridge Business School.

Douglas Ward BSc (Hons) MSc, MA, FCGI, C.Eng. FICE, FIEE
Director of Estates and Facilities/New Hospital Programme Director


Douglas Ward joined the Trust in June 2008. Douglas is a healthcare and facilities professional with wide ranging experience in operational management of major acute non-clinical services, planning, service development, project construction management, commissioning and dispute resolution on major acute hospital project developments.

Before joining the Trust, Douglas worked as Technical Director for Healthcare Delivery at Vita Lend Lease, an Australian consortia which led a number of Private Finance Initiative (PFI) developments. Previous roles include Director of Facilities & Estates/Project Director at St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust and Site Operations Manager at Guy’s Hospital.
