THE TRUST

Standards for Better Health

Aims and Vision

The Trust aims to:

Put patients first by treating them with dignity and respect, offering safe, skilled, sensitive care delivered by conscientious and committed staff in clean and pleasant environments.

Our purpose

Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust (WXUHT) came into being on 1 April 2001 following the dissolution of Forest Healthcare NHS Trust.

We provide hospital services to people mainly from Waltham Forest, west Redbridge, Essex and east London, funded by service level agreements with commissioners of services.  More than three quarters of our income is derived from the local Primary Care Trusts: Waltham Forest PCT and Redbridge PCT.

What is it?

The Standards for Better Health was introduced by the Healthcare Commission, and its purpose is to provide a new way of measuring performance in the NHS.  It focuses on the quality of care given to patients, divided into 24 standards, under seven main areas of provision.  These are:

Safety – such as the working practices which prevent or reduce the risk of harm to patients;

Clinical and cost effectiveness – which ensures clinical care and treatment are carried out under supervision and that people’s cultural, physical and psychological needs are met;

Governance – looks at managerial and clinical leadership and accountability;

Patient focus – this standard addresses whether healthcare is provided in partnership with patients, their carers and relatives, respecting their diverse needs;

Accessible and responsive care – s a measure of how promptly services are administered;

Care, environment and amenities – care should be provided in comfortable, clean and safe facilities;

Public health – looks at how an organisation collaborates with others to promote, protect and improve the health of the population it serves.

Trust performing?

The Care Quality Commission has taken over the work of the Healthcare Commission, and 2009/10 will be the last time self-declarations are to be made by Trusts.

The Trust has declared compliance with all the 24 standards
