Pre-operative Assessment

What we do

We provide a comprehensive health check for all patients undergoing an elective surgical procedure. All patients require this assessment prior to their surgery.

The pre-operative assessment service has been established within the day surgical setting at Whipps Cross for almost 20 years and has recently expanded over the last year with the development of an inpatient assessment unit.

So all patients undergoing a surgical procedure, whether as a day case or inpatient now undergo a Pre-operative Assessment. The assessments are based on two sites at the hospital:

Day Surgery Pre-operative AssessmentIs based at the Plane Tree Centre

Inpatient Pre-operative AssessmentIs based at Willow Lodge

The aim of Pre-operative Assessment is to provide a high standard of preparation, ensuring the patient and relatives are fully prepared and well enough for their procedure.

The assessment units are nurse-led and look at the patients psychological, physical and social well being.

Patients attending a pre-operative assessment fill in a health questionnaire and are asked about their general health by a nurse assessor. It is important that you bring along any current medications you are taking.

Some patients will then need to undergo tests such as blood pressure checks, blood tests or x-rays.

Initial screening provides an opportunity to manage potential problems that could result in delayed or even cancelled operations.

You will be given specific information regarding your operation or procedure and your admission and further information will be provided for your relatives or carer.

The assessment is also a valuable contact point for patients if they have any further concerns or questions prior to their procedure, they are able to phone the unit and speak to one of the nurses for advice and guidance.

The Clinical Lead for Pre-Operative Assessment is Dr. Gomathy Kandasamy.
