OUR DEPARTMENTS

Emergency Medical Centre (EMC)

What we do

The EMC was opened in 2003 to provide urgent consultant led assessment of medical emergencies in a 30 bed mixed sex unit.

It is committed to the delivery of high quality care to all adults presenting with medical problems. The unit allows doctors to quickly  carry out whatever investigations, treatments and care are needed, providing a rapid and efficient service to all patients on arrival.

A clear decision to either admit to a ward or to discharge from the unit will be agreed and discussed with each patient.

The aims of the EMC are:

  • To appropriately stream medical patients from A&E.
  • All patients to be seen by a doctor within one hour of arrival, and by a consultant within two to four hours (this is not always possible if the unit is very busy).
  • To provide a rapid assessment for accepted GP referrals.
  • To provide rapid access to diagnostic testing.
  • To provide specialist consultant opinion within 12 hours if required
  • To ensure nobody waits on a trolley for more than four hours.
  • To facilitate and speed up patient transfer to appropriate wards in collaboration with the Clinical Skills Team.
  • To work hand in hand with patients and their families to ensure quality of care is provided until the patient is discharged.
  • To have a consultant and the nursing team available on the EMC to discuss any patient concerns.

In short, we aim to provide the best care we can during your short stay.

To do this we need your continuous support and understanding. Help us to meet your needs by working in partnership.
