OUR DEPARTMENTS

Infection Control and Prevention

What we do

The Infection Control team work closely with all members of staff in the hospital.

We aim to reduce the risk of infection to patients, visitors and staff in the hospital.  This is done through various methods such as advising on management of patients, teaching, audit, policy development and surveillance of infection rates.

The team includes:

  • Dr Albert Mifsud
Director of Infection Prevention and Control
  • Jenny Kirsh
    Senior infection control nurse
  • Fiona McLoughlin
    Junior infection control nurse
  • Phil Cohen
    Infection control nurse (NELMHT)
  • Barabara Shamplina
    Administrator
  • Lorraine Parker

Hand Hygiene

The Trust has a policy for hand hygiene which is based on current best practice recommendations.

There is alcohol hand gel at the entrance to all wards and departments and at the ends of all beds.

All staff receive education and training on hand hygiene and the infection control team run regular awareness events.

The Trust participates in the National Patient Safety Agency, Clean Your Hands campaign.

Although we do not expect our patients to have to ask our staff if their hands are clean, it is OK to ask a member staff to clean their hands before touching you or a relative if you have not seen them do so.
