How to get treatment

To be seen by one of the Clinical  Health Psychology team you will need a referral from one of our hospital consultants, senior nurses or senior therapists.

We do not accept referrals from GPs (General Practitioners).

Patients aged 65 or over should be referred to the Woodbury Unit next to the hospital site.

Once referred, you will receive a referral letter asking if you would like to see a psychologist and when you would be available to attend an appointment.

Further Information

Please note that your first appointment with a psychologist will usually last an hour.

More information is provided on the information sheet sent to all new referrals.

Self-help

The Royal College of Psychiatry's leaflet on Physical Illness and Mental Health is particularly relevant to general hospital patients and staff.

At the bottom of this page you will find copies of an excellent set of self-help materials produced by the Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland Mental Health Trust

For a list of similar leaflets in languages other than English see the Self-Help Matrix below.
