Therapies and Hospital at Home

What we do

We provide a wide range of services at various sites within the local community. These include:

  • Acute Physiotherapy Service
This involves the assessment and treatment of patients using physical approaches to promote, maintain and restore physical, psychological and social well being.

  • Adult Community Physiotherapy Service
Is a service for people who are housebound and are unable to access hospital based physiotherapy.

Physiotherapy takes place in the client's own home.

  • Children's Occupational Therapy
This is to help children and their families to either gain or maintain the ability to carry out every day activities and tasks.

Children are referred who have difficulty completing activities such as washing, dressing and feeding themselves, getting around their home or using essential home and/or school facilities.

The children's occupational therapists are employed by either the London Borough of Waltham Forest or Waltham Forest Primary Care Trust.

  • Community Paediatric Physiotherapy Team
Work in special educational needs schools, main stream schools with the child development team, and in the community.

The team works closely with paediatric orthotists, other teams in the specialist children's service and education to provide an integrated and multi-agency approach to management.

  • Gillian Revell Therapy Unit
Rehabilitates older people from Peace and Victory wards at Whipps Cross. It is a multi disciplinary team including occupational therapists, speech and language, physiotherapists, rehabilitation assistants and a physiotherapy assistant.

  • Hospital at Home
Is a team of therapists and nurses who support people on discharge from hospital or prevent avoidable admission to hospital.

The service provides short term rehabilitation at home for up to six weeks allowing the person to regain skills that may have been lost following a period of ill health.

  • Intermediate Care Services
This can be described as a 'bridge' between hospital and home. It is a rehabilitation service that aims to help people regain the best possible level of independence following illness by hospitalisation or to avoid an unnecessary hospital admission.

It is for people who would usually need a short period of rehabilitation between two to six weeks and is provided a multi disciplinary team in three locations; George Mason Lodge Intermediate Care Unit, Walton House Intermediate Care Unit, Ainslie Rehabilitation Unit.

  • Nutrition & Dietetics
All dietetic staff work as part of the healthcare team providing nutrition and dietetic services in a variety of roles and specialities including inpatient, outpatient, groups and training.

  • Occupational Therapy - Acute Services
Provides a service to patients from the adult inpatient wards, Connaught Day Hospital, A&E and those requiring out-patient treatment.

For inpatients we aim to provide timely and accurate assessment of their abilities and difficulties.

The A&E therapy team aim to prevent unnecessary admissions and ensure a safe discharge to the community. The outpatient service provides rehabilitation for patients with upper limb injuries.

  • Orthotics Department
Is involved with the prescription and supply of appliances to support and correct the body.

First appointments are for assessment only. Patients are rarely supplied with their orthotic appliance at their first assessment.

  • Outpatient Physiotherapy
Treating people with acute and long term conditions. All patients are individually assessed to determine the most appropriate form of physiotherapy treatment.

Sessional outpatient physiotherapy is also offered at Chingford Health Centre, Langthorne Health Centre, St. James Health Centre and Forest Medical Centre.

  • Primary Care Occupational Therapy Rehabilitation Service
This therapy service in the community is for patients with a wide range of physical disabilities, who require rehabilitation in their own homes/local community.

The rehabilitation programme is tailored to the individual patient's needs in areas of daily activities.

We work closely with other professionals in health, social services and the voluntary sector.

  • Speech and Language Therapy
Provides a service to adults and children with communication and/or a difficulty eating and/or drinking.

  • Stroke Rehabilitation Unit
Provides specialist inpatient rehabilitation for stroke patients. The 12 stroke rehabilitation beds are based on Peace ward.

It is a therapy-nurse led unit. The aim is to enable stroke patients to achieve their full potential and regain their optimal independence in a multidisciplinary environment.

  • Wheelchair and Special Seating Service
This services aims to provide mobility, posture and seating equipment to anyone with a permanent mobility problem in the borough of Waltham Forest.

A wide variety of equipment is provided. All repairs are carried out free of charge to the user providing the chair was supplied from the Wheelchair Service.

A voucher scheme is also available which enables people to upgrade their wheelchair provided by the Wheelchair Service, if they want a chair of a higher specification.

The Wheelchair Service is unable to accept referrals for short term or occasional attendant operated use.

Wheelchairs can be loaned or hired from Red Cross, telephone: 020 8518 9210.
