Department of Medicine for Elderly Patients (DMEP)

What we do

The Department of Medicine for Elderly People (DMEP) provide a range of acute, rehabilitation and outpatient services to elderly patients.

Specialist day services are provided at Connaught Day Hospital. With patients arriving in the morning and going home at the end of day.

This includes:

  • Falls Clinic
  • Balance Class

Patients are seen by the multidisciplinary team where some patients have Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy and input from the medical team.

Consultants have a case conference each week to discuss each case or to decide if some of the specialist services will benefit the patient. If so, a letter will be sent from Connaught Day Hospital to notify the patient when their appointment is.

If inpatient treatment is required or elderly patients have come into hospital in an emergency, they will normally be treated on the following wards, Beech, Birch, Blackthorn, Bracken and Conifer. Elderly rehabilitation is provided on Victory Ward.

Outpatient appointments take place in our main outpatient department.

Where to find us

  • Outpatient department
    Is located in the Yellow Zone. Access is from Hospital Road.
  • Connaught Day Hospital
    Is located in Margaret Close and is not connected to the main hospital. Nearest Access is from the James Lane entrance to the hospital.
  • Beech Ward
    Is located on the 1st floor at Junction 7 in the Pink Zone.
  • Birch Ward
    Is located on the 2nd floor at Junction 7 in the Pink Zone.
  • Blackthorn Ward
    Is located on the 2nd floor at Junction 7 in the Pink Zone.
  • Bracken Ward
    Is located on the 1st floor at Junction 7 in the Pink Zone.
  • Conifer Ward
    Is located on the 2 floor at Junction 3 in the Orange Zone.
  • Victory ward
    Is located on the lower ground floor at Junction 10 in the Green Zone.

How to get treatment

To get an appointment with the DMEP team you will need to be referred by your GP (General Practitioner) or hospital consultant.
