We provide treatment for conditions that affect the female reproductive system.
In addition to general gynaecology, we have specialised services including:
Patients are seen in outpatient clinics and if treatment or surgery is required this can often be done as a day case in our Plane Tree Centre.
Or if patients need to be admitted they are normally cared for on Rowan Ward.
The team includes 8 consultants, including two female consultants, and we work in close liaison with our maternity services.
Colposcopy
This service forms part of the national cervical screening programme seeing women that have had an abnormal cervical smear test or where there is a clinical concern about their cervix.
Once referred the patient is contacted by colposcopy staff to book an appointment. Patients are prioritised according to strict clinical criteria with appointing conforming to Department of Health guidelines.
Colposcopy clinics are held on the Planetree Centre. All patients are seen for an initial appointment and are notified of the outcome of that appointment by letter.
Where treatment is required this is either carried out in the colposcopy clinic or through admission as a day case or inpatient.
The colposcopy unit strives to provide a service that is sensitive to women and receptive to their needs, therefore, women are encouraged to contact the unit with any concerns or queries.
Further information is available on the NHS cancer screening website, please click here to open the website.
Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit
This is a nurse led service for women who are having problems in the early stages (between six to 18 weeks) of their pregnancy, for example bleeding or pain.
Patients are seen in the unit, which is based on Rowan ward and given a scan or sent for further tests if required.
Dependent on the results they may be referred to a consultant, admitted to the ward or discharged.
Fast Track service from A&E
Women who attend A&E with clinically urgent gynaecological problems and meet specific criteria are sent straight to Rowan Ward to get specialist medical care from a member of the gynaecology team.
Hysteroscopy
This is an examination of the inside of the uterus (womb). This examination can be carried out in an outpatient clinic, based on the Plane Tree centre, or as an admission as a day case or inpatient.
Once referred to the outpatient service the patient is contacted by hysteroscopy staff to book an appointment.
Patients are prioritised according to strict clinical criteria with appointing conforming to Department of Health guidelines.

To get an appointment with the Gynaecology team or one of the specialist services you need a referral from your GP (General Practitioner) or another clinic.
To be seen by in the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit, again your GP needs to refer you. They should ring and make an appointment for you and give you a green radiology form.
