What we do

Our vision is to give the best medical care to our patients and this is provided at the Gillian Hanson centre of diabetes.

The diabetes team consists of a large multidisciplinary team including three consultants, three diabetes nurses and a backup of secretaries and administrative staff.

Our centre also houses a chiropody department specialising in the management of diabetic foot problems.

Our diabetes department provides both outpatient and inpatient care:

Outpatients
Clinics are consultant and nurse-led. Specialist clinics include:

  • Adolescent
  • Pregnancy – held in antenatal clinic jointly with Obstetrician, consultant Diabetologist, specialist diabetes midwife

Inpatients
We manage inpatients with all forms of diabetes and are available to give advice to inpatients with diabetes whilst they are undergoing treatment for other reasons for example undergoing surgery.

Investigations
In addition to clinics the unit can also carry out:

  • Continuous glucose monitoring
  • 24 hour blood pressure monitoring

Treatments
These include:

  • Oral treatments for diabetes
  • Insulin starts, titration and management.
